History – Launched in 1894 as the Effie M. Morrissey in Essex, Massachusetts, this schooner has had a diverse career. She began as a Grand Banks fishing vessel, later served as an Arctic explorer under Captain Robert A. “Bob” Bartlett, and conducted survey and supply missions during World War II. Renamed Ernestina in 1946, she operated as a transatlantic packet ship between Cape Verde and the United States. In 1982, the Republic of Cape Verde gifted her to the United States, and she became a sail training vessel and cultural ambassador. Designated a National Historic Landmark in 1990, she is currently undergoing extensive rehabilitation to continue her educational mission.
